The Best Fall Photo Spots in Richmond, VA

Fall is my favorite season to photograph in Richmond. The light turns warm and low, the evenings are comfortable again, and for a few weeks the city's parks and gardens go gold, rust and red. It's also short: the best color usually arrives in late October and is mostly gone by mid-November, so a little planning goes a long way.

Here are the places I recommend most for fall family photos, engagement sessions and portraits, what makes each one work this time of year, and a few practical notes. If you'd rather keep it simple, I'm running fall mini sessions at two of them this October, and the details are at the end.

When does fall color peak in Richmond?

Color builds through October and usually peaks from the last week of October into early November, depending on the weather. A warm, dry fall can hold the leaves a little longer, and one windy storm can take them down early. The maples and dogwoods tend to turn first, with the big oaks following into November.

The time of day matters just as much. The warmest, softest light comes in the hour or two before sunset, which is around 6:30 in mid-October. When the clocks go back on Sunday, November 1, sunset jumps to about 5:10, so golden-hour sessions move into the late afternoon.

My favorite fall photo spots in Richmond

Maymont

If I could only pick one fall location in Richmond, it would be Maymont. The arboretum across its 100 acres puts on a real show in October and November, and the Japanese Garden, with its maples, stone paths and waterfall, is at its best when the leaves change. There's so much variety that even a short session can move from open lawns to quiet garden corners without feeling rushed.

No permit is needed for personal portrait sessions like family and graduation photos. Park at the Dooley Center lot (1700 Hampton Street) for the quickest walk to the Italian and Japanese gardens, and expect weekend crowds at peak color. Read my full Maymont guide.

Bryan Park

Bryan Park, on Richmond's Northside, is quieter than Maymont and full of mature trees, with wide lawns, wooded edges and walking paths that glow in late-afternoon light. It's an easy place for families with little ones to spread out, and it's where the first of this year's fall mini sessions happens.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

Lewis Ginter is the most polished of the group: formal gardens, water features and seasonal plantings that keep it colorful well into the fall, plus greenhouse and covered spots if the weather turns. It suits couples and families who love a manicured garden look.

Agecroft Hall & Gardens

Agecroft is a Tudor manor house in Windsor Farms, and its gardens and stone paths look wonderful framed in fall color. It gives a session an old-world, storybook feel without leaving the city, which makes it a favorite for engagement sessions and couples.

It's a museum and event venue, so sessions need to be arranged with Agecroft ahead of time. Read my Agecroft guide.

Capitol Square

For a classic downtown look, Capitol Square pairs the white columns of the Virginia State Capitol with big, old trees that color up in the fall. It's ideal if you want architecture and a strong sense of place in the same frame.

The VMFA Sculpture Garden

In the Museum District, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' Sculpture Garden brings together modern architecture, art, water features and trees that turn in autumn. It's a great fit for couples and anyone who wants their fall photos to feel a little more editorial.

The outdoor campus and Sculpture Garden are the practical areas for portraits; anything more involved than a simple session is worth checking with the museum first. Read my VMFA guide.

Brown's Island and the riverfront

Brown's Island mixes fall color with the James River, pedestrian bridges and the downtown skyline, so you get city character and seasonal warmth in the same session. Golden hour here is lovely.

Tips for great fall photos

• Book golden hour. The last hour or two before sunset gives warm, flattering light and glowing leaves. Just remember that sunset moves an hour earlier after November 1.
• Dress in the season's colors. Rust, cream, olive, mustard and deep neutrals look great against fall leaves. Avoid bright white and heavy patterns, and aim to coordinate rather than match.
• Add texture and layers. Knits, corduroy, denim and a jacket you can take on and off add depth to the photos and keep everyone comfortable as the evening cools.
• Beat the crowds. Maymont and the gardens get busy on fall weekends, so an early start or a weekday session helps at peak color.
• Have a rain plan. Lewis Ginter and the VMFA both have covered options if the weather turns.
• Think about holiday cards now. Most galleries are delivered within two weeks, so a late-October session leaves plenty of time to order cards.

Fall mini sessions on October 17 and 24

This year I'm running fall mini sessions on two Saturday afternoons, one park each day:

• Bryan Park: Saturday, October 17
• Maymont: Saturday, October 24

Each session is 25 minutes for up to five people and includes 15 professionally edited images in an online gallery with personal printing rights, for $225. Sessions start at 2:30 and run through the late afternoon, finishing around sunset, and there are only eight spots per date. Galleries arrive in early November, in time for holiday cards.
