Planning Family Photos at Your Lake Gaston or Kerr Lake House

There is something special about family photos at the lake. Everyone is already together, the pace is slower, and the setting feels personal before the session even begins.

For families gathering on the Virginia side of Lake Gaston or Kerr Lake, a photo session can be a way to remember more than just what everyone looked like. It can preserve the dock where the kids spent the week jumping into the water, the porch where grandparents drank coffee in the morning, the shoreline where cousins ran around barefoot, and the rare feeling of having everyone in one place.

I’m a Richmond-based photographer serving lake house family sessions across Virginia, including Lake Gaston, Kerr Lake, Lake Anna, and other waterfront destinations. Lake Anna has been a beautiful example of how meaningful these sessions can be, and I bring that same relaxed, documentary-meets-polished approach to families planning photos at Lake Gaston and Kerr Lake.

Why Lake House Family Photos Work So Well

Lake house sessions are naturally personal. Instead of meeting at a generic location, your photos happen where your family is already spending time together.

That might be your own lake house, a vacation rental, a dock, a boat house, a shaded yard, a nearby marina, or a quiet shoreline area. The location becomes part of the story.

These sessions are especially good for extended families. When grandparents, adult children, grandkids, cousins, and siblings are all gathered for one trip, it is a perfect time to create photos that everyone can keep.

I usually photograph a mix of:

Full family group portraits

Individual households

Grandparents with grandkids

Couples and siblings

Kids playing near the water

Candid moments around the house, dock, or shoreline

Lake Gaston Family Photos on the Virginia Side

Lake Gaston is a beautiful place for family photography because so many sessions can happen right where your family is staying. The dock, yard, porch, and lake view often give us everything we need.

If your property has open water views, we will usually want to plan around the best light direction. Some docks photograph best in the morning. Others are better in the evening. If your dock faces harsh afternoon sun, we can use shaded areas first and save the water photos for softer light.

Lake Gaston sessions are great for vacationing families, family reunions, anniversary weekends, and summer trips where everyone is together for a few days.

Kerr Lake Family Photos on the Virginia Side

Kerr Lake has a little more spacious, natural feeling in many areas, which can be beautiful for families who want a quieter outdoor session. Depending on where you are staying, we may be able to use shoreline access, wooded paths, boat ramps, open fields, or the area around your rental or family property.

For Kerr Lake sessions, I like to keep the session easy and flexible. If your family is staying for a vacation week or reunion, we can build the photos around the actual place where everyone is gathering.

The result feels less like a formal appointment and more like a polished record of the trip.

Best Time of Day for Lake Photos

For both Lake Gaston and Kerr Lake, the best light is usually early morning or the last hour before sunset.

Water reflects light strongly, so midday sun can be bright and harsh, especially on docks or open lawns. Golden hour gives softer skin tones, warmer color, and a more relaxed feeling.

Morning sessions can be a great fit for families with young kids. Evening sessions work beautifully for families who want that warm sunset look.

If your group has a lot of people, I recommend starting with the most important full-family combinations first, then moving into smaller groups and candid photos as everyone relaxes.

What to Wear for Lake Gaston or Kerr Lake Family Photos

For lake house family sessions, I recommend outfits that feel comfortable, polished, and natural near the water.

Soft blues, whites, creams, denim, muted greens, warm neutrals, and gentle earth tones usually work well. You do not need everyone to match exactly. It is better to coordinate colors across the group so the final gallery feels cohesive without looking too staged.

Bare feet can look great on docks or sandy shoreline areas. If we are walking through grass, gravel, or wooded areas, comfortable shoes are helpful.

Avoid very small patterns, neon colors, and large logos if possible. These can pull attention away from faces.

Planning Around Kids, Weather, and Big Family Groups

Lake sessions work best when there is a little flexibility built in. Kids may want to run around. Someone may be coming in from the boat. The weather may shift. That is all normal.

For young kids, I keep the session moving. We will get the important posed photos, but I also leave room for movement, play, and little breaks.

For large family groups, I recommend making a quick list ahead of time with the most important photo combinations. That helps us move efficiently so the session does not feel overwhelming.

For weather, cloudy skies are often great for photos. Light rain may require a backup plan, but covered porches, docks, trees, and indoor lake house spaces can still give us meaningful images if the property allows for it.

Also Serving Lake Anna Families

I also photograph lake house family sessions at Lake Anna, which is a great reference point for the style of relaxed waterfront photography I create.

If you are planning photos at Lake Gaston or Kerr Lake, my Lake Anna family sessions can give you a strong sense of the look and pacing: golden hour dock portraits, multi-generation family photos, kids near the water, and natural vacation moments.
