Audrey and Hammza got married at Maymont this June, and it was one of those days where everything lined up right when it needed to. The clouds hung around all afternoon, held off through the ceremony, and opened up just as we finished portraits. More on that in a minute.
Where it started: engagement photos at Agecroft
I first worked with Audrey and Hammza last fall for their engagement session at Agecroft Hall. The Tudor manor and the gardens dropping down toward the James make it one of my favorite spots in Richmond, and the two of them were easy to photograph from the first frame.
Doing the engagement session first helps more than people expect. By the wedding we already knew each other, they knew how I work, and nobody had to warm up in front of the camera on the big day.
Getting ready and the details
Audrey was getting ready at the Quirk Hotel in downtown Richmond. This made for a great detail photo backdrop. Audrey and Hammza put real thought into the small things, from the rings and invitation suite to fragrances and shoes.
The ceremony at Maymont
Audrey and Hammza had their ceremony at Picnic Hill. This made for a breathtaking view over acres of Maymont property. Maymont gives you so much to work with in summer: shade trees, stonework, and gardens that look different around every corner.
Beating the rain
Rain had been in the forecast all week, and the sky looked heavy all afternoon. It held through the ceremony. Right after, we slipped away for a few minutes of couple portraits while the light was still soft.
We got just enough before the first drops hit. Then it came down for real, and the two of them took off running for cover together. I kept shooting, and that frame ended up being one of my favorites from the whole day. It looks exactly like how the day felt.
The reception was beautiful, it was held at the historic Westover property in the courtyard.
A few frames on film
Along with digital, I shoot film at every wedding. Here is shot mostly Portra 400. Film gives these a warmth and grain that sits nicely alongside the digital gallery.
